The well known Johannes Christiaan Schotel, born in Dordrecht, Holland was a maritime painter. The representation of ships was his specialty, rigging and people against an often threatening background of sky and water. Schotel was probably the most important marine painter of the nineteenth century. His work was a continuation of the tradition of Dutch seventeenth-century sea painters such as Willem van de Velde the Elder and Ludolf Backhuizen.
The Dordts Museum is in possession of a similar painting of Martinus Schouman, the teacher of Schotel. Possibly this is an early work by Schotel.
