Attractive and very detailed gouache of the brig Amsterdam by the well known marine painter Teupkens. It is one of the better works of Teupkens. In the foreground the brig in rough weather, seen on the port side. In the background an image of the starboard side and one with the poop. In the foremast flies the flag of the College Zeemanshoop with number 289. The register of Zeemanshoop on Muntplein 10 in Amsterdam, indicates that this number belonged to captain J.G. de Jong at that time.
The brig is a two-master, square rigged with two or more foresails and a fore-sail on the aft mast, the brig sail.

Figurehead of an unknown ship. Not for the prow, but placed somewhere on the ship as a ship’s decoration. It is a particularly decorative and richly decorated female statue with long locks and a medallion around her neck that unfortunately went up in flames along with her ship. What remains is an image with history that shows what fire can do on board.

The well known Johannes Christiaan Schotel, born in Dordrecht, Holland was a maritime painter. The representation of ships was his specialty, rigging and people against an often threatening background of sky and water. Schotel was probably the most important marine painter of the nineteenth century. His work was a continuation of the tradition of Dutch seventeenth-century sea painters such as Willem van de Velde the Elder and Ludolf Backhuizen.
The Dordts Museum is in possession of a similar painting of Martinus Schouman, the teacher of Schotel. Possibly this is an early work by Schotel.

Wooden sailing cargo ships in the Netherlands liked to show off their stern. This part of the vessel with deck-house and skipper at the helm naturally caught the attention of the on-shore spectators. The top of the rudder, on top of the wooden helmet, was therefore often decorated with carvings in the shape of a rudder head, a rudder lion or a rudder click.
This multi-colored, beautifully decorated rudder click shows a cornucopia from which comes a green painted oak branch with leaves and acorns, the corners decorated with a cut rope and a brass knob.
In Greek mythology, Zeus was raised by Amaltheia, often depicted as a goat. When one of her horns was broken off, Zeus filled it abundantly with riches and then handed it to the goddess Fortuna.

Two with fine craftmanship made French Navy flint pistols with octagonal, brass barrel, wooden butts and foldable bayonet. Original quality with traces of silver filigree in the butts. Navy pistols are equipped with brass parts due to the weather conditions at sea.
Weapons like these are not top pieces, but they display like no other utensil the atmosphere of combat at sea. Keeping in hand lets feel very well how the battle at sea could take place. Namely from very close. The shot distance was only a few meters. The opponent, a man like you, can be looked into the eyes. And the weapon can only be fired once.
